Beautiful vineyards from Croatia in the spotlight

Croatian wines are distinguished by their variety, which stems from the incredibly great climatic variety in this small country. In the south, in Dalmatia, we find a hot Mediterranean climate, while the north of the country offers the same as the fresh, green and humid wine regions in the Alps. Grapes have been grown in these vineyards for thousands of years and we have highlighted some of them.

The wines from Croatia are distinguished by their diversity, which stems from the enormous climatic variety in this relatively small country. The entire coastal region of Croatia has a Mediterranean climate with warm hot summers and mild pleasant winters. The interior of Croatia has a mainly continental climate with warm summers and cold winters where snowfall is not uncommon.

the south of croatia, Dalmatia therefore has a Mediterranean climate, while northern and eastern Croatia has a fresh, green and mostly wooded environment that is very similar to the Alpine region. In particular, this diversity ensures that the wine from Croatia that comes from the coastal region has a completely different taste, smell and color than the wine from the north and east of Croatia.

In the many vineyards that Croatia is rich, grapes have been grown in the various vineyards for thousands of years. Besides wine is olive oil also a very important product for the coastal regions. In addition to vineyards, you will therefore often encounter olive groves. We have highlighted some of these vineyards below.

Dingach vineyard – Peljesac, Dalmatia

One of the most famous wine from Croatia is the Dingach. This one Red wine is, as you would expect, not named after the grape variety it is made from but after the vineyard. The Dingach vineyard is located in the south of Dalmatia on the peninsula Peljesac.

The name Dingach has been a protected brand name since 1952. The wine Dingach is made from the Plavac mali grapes. The Dingach vineyards is characterized by steep slopes that rise several hundred meters from the sea.

Bucavac vineyard – Primošten, Dalmatia

The vineyard is a very respectable vineyard that there is a large photo of this vineyard in the UN headquarters in New York. Known as a symbol of human labour, the many stone walls protecting the vines have been erected to hold the precious and exceptionally fertile soil and thus protect it from erosion.

The strong sea winds would move this fertile soil to the sea in winter. The grapes of famous and eponymous Croatian wine Babić is grown on the vineyards of Bucavac in Primošten. The blue grape variety Babić is grown only in Croatia and produces high-quality wine that can be kept for a long time.

De Babić is a deep red wine that is often highly valued during tastings. The Babić is an indigenous grape variety from Croatia that gives a deep red wine with a rich taste of cherries and soft tannin. It is a grape that needs a good vineyard and a winegrower who knows how to handle pruning shears.

Croatian wine from Slavonia

In addition to the many vineyards on the Croatian coast, there are also many wine regions in the continental part of Croatia where both white and Red wine is made. One of the most famous wine regions is along the Danuberiver in the east of Slavonia† This area is also known for its famous white wines as Grasevina, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay en Riesling. Of the red wines are the Blaufränkisch, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir en Zweigelt most commonly planted in this region.
