History of Korčula
People have lived on the island for thousands of years. The Greeks settled on the island as early as the sixth century BC. Around the year one hundred the island came under the rule of the Roman Empire. In the 7th century, the Croats settled in the interior of the island.
The island then became part of a new state, the Venetian Republic. The island remained part of the Venetian Republic until the fall of Venice in 1797. This was followed by a change of administrators, including Austrians, French, again Austrians followed by the Italians. Shortly after WWI, in 1921, Korčula became part of the first Yugoslav state. After the Republic of Croatia became independent in 1992, Korčula became part of the Republic of Croatia.
Ode to Marco Polo
Korčula has many attractions! The island is known as the birthplace of the famous explorer Marco Polo (the island was part of Venice at the time). The birthplace of Marco Polo is therefore one of the most visited places on the island. Because Korčula has had several rulers, it has left beautiful cultural traces. As an ode to Marco Polo, the winery has also released a wine under the name Marko polo

The winery Blato grows several grape varieties, including specific grape varieties that are only found on the island of Korčula, such as the Cetinka grape variety. Other Croatian grape varieties from Blato are the Plavac mali, Posip, Maraština i Zlatarica Blatska. But also the more famous grape varieties such as the Merlot thrive very well in the vineyards of Korčula. In addition to wine, there is also olive oil and liquor liqueur.
If you are on holiday in Korčula, a visit to the interior of Korčula should not be missed. It can be easily combined with a bike ride through the island or a car ride.

In addition to the many vineyards and olive groves on the Croatian coast, there are also many wine regions in the continental part of Croatia where both white and Red wine is made.
