Graševina grape

Graševina an international grape variety

Graševina (gra-she-wi-na) grape is an international grape variety whose origin is not entirely certain. Some sources claim that it is of French origin, others that it is Romanian and there are also speculations that it may be of Italian or Austrian origin.

The prefixes welsch, laški, olasz and vlašsky in different languages mean “from Wallachia” or, in Croatian, “Iz Vlaške”, which clearly suggests that the wine comes from the south of Romania, as this region has been called for centuries. However, in Romania this type of wine is Riesling called Italico.

The origin may not be entirely clear, the Graševina grape mainly belongs to the countries and regions associated with the Danube lying down. More precisely, this grape variety is grown in all countries of the DanubeRegion: Croatia, Hungary, Serbia, Czech Republic, Romania and Austria, as well as two countries outside the Danuberegion, viz Italy and Slovenia.

Popularity of Graševina grapes

Graševina Its popularity is mainly due to some 'rewarding' characteristics such as a high regular yield as well as an excellent adaptability to different soils and the humid continental climate.

The international image of Graševina grapes has suffered some damage over the years due to two reasons. The first is a mediocre quality that has been maintained over decades by the socialist economies in most of the above countries. In recent years, the quality of the Graševina grapes made a huge catch up, making the wine of Graševina grapes has become increasingly known and has won several awards itself. The second reason is somewhat the choice of the name.

Graševina grape is no Riesling

A large number of synonyms for the Graševina grapes contains the term Riesling, which causes confusion among the average consumer. As a result, the Graševina grapes thought to be a copy of the Riesling, but it certainly isn't. It is therefore an unjust conclusion.

Graševina is a white grape variety and contains significantly different characteristics than the Riesling and these two should in no way be confused with each other.

Origin of the term Graševina

Despite the uncertainty about the origin of the Graševina grape is certain that it has found a new home environment in Croatia as no other country has such large quantities of wine from the Graševina produces grapes. The Graševina The grape is grown by most vineyards in the continental part of Croatia and covers more than 50% of the total area of the vineyards.

The Croats have grown so close to this grape variety that they have given it a special name. Graševina is a derivative of 'grašak' (pea) and 'vino' (wine), which can be traced back to the stage of ripening in which this grape variety initially still has the appearance of a green pea.
